I Saved A Life...and took one too

On Friday, I got called into sub for a class whose substitute failed to show up. On the way to school, I noticed a little ole turtle working as hard as it could to cross the road. For a quick second, I thought, "Poor thing. I hope he makes it to where he's trying to go." Then I looked up, and saw a car coming straight toward it. Which led me to do the next thing--something, I would rarely do. I pulled over to the side of the road and picked that little turtle up by his shell. When I did, he tucked his head and feet in for safety. Then I safely put him on the other side of the road and told him to have a good day. I was a hero. I saved a life. Yes, some of you may be saying: "It's just a turtle, but hey, turtles are living creatures too and they deserve to live."
But now I must confess, that same day during lunch, there was a commotion coming from the children in my class. I went to investigate and one of the girls said, "There's a cockroach!". Okay, I hate cockroaches. Sorry, but I do. So when the children encouraged me to kill it, I took my foot up and hit him (he was crawling on the wall--YUCK. Don't cafeterias have ratings?). Well, he fell. End of life, or so I thought. A few seconds later, the children began yelling again, "he's alive, he's alive. He came back alive." I went to inspect. Sure enough, that thing was crawling up the wall again. So the children were once again saying, "Kill it." Which I did. This time squishing him. End of life, or so I thought. As I turned to walk away. One of the children said, it's magic. He's alive again. I was like, "What is this Rasputin the cockroach? (if ya'll don't know the story of the Rasputin, and the many attempts to kill him off, you should definitely do a search and read up on it, talk about 9 lives! I love the story, very interesting person in Russian history.) Finally, I put that thing out of it's misery. He was dead! I made sure of it. Some of you may say, "but,it's a living creature, it should deserve to live. Sorry, but a hero can only do so much in one day!"

Don't feel bad. My "lives taken" list is way longer than my "lives saved" list. Well, unless you count me having my kids buckle up everytime we get in the car. Isn't that supposed to save your life? Then maybe I am even.
